Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Certification is a means for providing third party guarantee of quality, safety and reliability of products to the customer. BIS Certification is voluntary in nature; however, the Government of India has made BIS certification mandatory for certain products taking into consideration public health.
The products are brought under compulsory certification by the Central Government as per the provision of BIS Act, 2016 or other Acts. As on April 2018, 116 of such products have been notified, in following groups:
1. Cement
2. Household electrical goods
3. Batteries
4. Food and related products
5. Oil pressure stoves
6. Automobile accessories
7. Cylinders, Valves, and Regulators
8. Medical Equipment
9. Steel and Stainless Steel Products
10. Electrical Motors
11. Electrical Transformers
12. Capacitors
13. Chemicals and Fertilizers
Govt. Fees:
The application fee, renewal application fee and annual licence fee is ₹ 1,000 each and the visit charges are ₹ 7,000 per Monday. The marking fee for each product is specified individually in the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
Timeline for grating BIS licence:
Average time taken for grant of licence under is generally 4-6 months from the date of receipt of complete application and its recording. It may vary for reasons like delay in response to queries raised, if any; organizing inspection(s); sample deposition and fee dues, etc.
